Government revenue in Mauritius
Taxes and other income the government collects, as a share of the economy.
Where it stands
About 25% of GDP. The 2026-27 Budget adds new revenue measures: a 35% income-tax band above Rs 12 million, higher excise duties on tobacco, spirits and sugary products, a Rs 2 excise on all plastic bottles and a 5% insurance premium tax from January 2027.
What it means
By European standards (40%+) the State collects relatively little, yet it spent about 32% of GDP in 2025-26 (Rs 250.1bn): hence the deficit. Closing that gap means collecting more, spending less, or growing faster.
