Investment (% of GDP) in Mauritius
How much of the economy's output is spent on building future capacity: factories, roads, homes, machines and software.
Where it stands
19.9% of GDP in 2025. The UN's review of the 2026-27 Budget notes that capital expenditure is projected to nearly double, from roughly 2.5% to 4% of GDP, so the ratio could rise if projects are actually delivered.
What it means
Economies that transformed quickly, such as those in East Asia, typically invested 25-35% of GDP for decades. At around 20%, Mauritius is investing enough to maintain what it has rather than to leap ahead: one reason growth has settled near 3%.
Recent years
| Year | Investment (% of GDP) |
|---|---|
| 2021 | 19.6% |
| 2022 | 20.4% |
| 2023 | 19.9% |
| 2024 | 21.1% |
| 2025 | 19.9% |
Why it moved
2021: Projects restarted after lockdowns, helped by public infrastructure such as the Metro Express extensions.
2022: Construction picked up with the reopening.
2023: Higher interest rates (Key Rate at 4.5%) made borrowing to invest more expensive.
2024: Pre-election public works and housing lifted the ratio to its highest in the period.
2025: Slipped back as the government cut spending to repair its finances.
