National income per person (Atlas) in Mauritius
Income earned by residents, including from abroad, per person. The World Bank uses this number to classify countries as low, middle or high income.
Where it stands
Right on the World Bank's high-income line (US$13,935 in the 2025 classification). Whether Mauritius re-enters the group depends on the threshold update each July.
What it means
Crossing the line is partly symbolic, but it has real effects: high-income countries lose access to some cheap development loans and are judged by investors against richer peers. Mauritius has crossed it once and slipped back: staying above it needs growth that consistently outpaces inflation and rupee weakness.
Recent years
| Year | National income per person (Atlas) |
|---|---|
| 2021 | 10900 $ |
| 2022 | 11810 $ |
| 2023 | 12530 $ |
| 2024 | 12960 $ |
| 2025 | 14040 $ |
Why it moved
2021: Mauritius had just joined the high-income group (July 2020, based on 2019 income) but fell back to upper-middle income in 2021 after COVID hit.
2022: Recovery begins as tourism and services restart.
2023: Continues to rise on tourism and financial services.
2024: $12,960: still below the high-income threshold (about $13,900).
2025: $14,040: right at the threshold again.
