GDP per person in Mauritius
The value of everything produced in a year divided by the number of people, in US dollars. A rough gauge of average living standards.
Where it stands
About US$13,000 per person: a record and among the highest in Africa.
What it means
On average, Mauritians are richer than ever in dollar terms. But averages hide a lot: part of the 2022-23 rise was inflation, and part comes from a shrinking population (fewer people sharing the same output). It does not tell you whether your own pay kept up with prices: compare it with the cumulative price level indicator.
Recent years
| Year | GDP per person |
|---|---|
| 2021 | 9178 $ |
| 2022 | 10247 $ |
| 2023 | 11270 $ |
| 2024 | 11991 $ |
| 2025 | 12991 $ |
Why it moved
2021: Still well below 2019 ($11,568): COVID wiped out about a seventh of output and the rupee weakened, shrinking the dollar value.
2022: Output rebounded, but a weaker rupee (about 44 per dollar, from 42) held the dollar figure back.
2023: Strong growth plus high inflation lifted the rupee value of output.
2024: Back above the pre-COVID level for the first time.
2025: Steady growth, a stable rupee and a slightly smaller population pushed it to a record.
